Handmade Oriental rug
211 x 148cm (6'11 x 4'10)
The product has not yet been received into our stock in Tewkesbury; therefore, the images are perhaps not as good as our normal images. However, they are actual photographs of the finished rug. Once the rug has been transferred from our warehouse, we will rephotograph it.
This exciting, complex design is possibly a rug you might consider if you were looking for a centrepiece for your room. But, of course, the artisan Afghan weaver would have to be highly skilled to create such a magnificent design, which I am sure could be used and enjoyed anywhere in the home. The colour palette is also quite unusual. The base background colour is best described as a shade of cream; the centre panel has a strong middle design in red, dark blue and pale blue. Revolving around the central motif is multiple tile-like designs based on flower petals.

Mamluk designs are simply stunning. The designs often revolving around large medallions with intersecting compartments are becoming more common in modern Oriental carpets and rugs. Undoubtedly this trend has led to the poorly attempted machine-made copies gaining some exposure.
The history of these ancient Egyptian carpet designs could be traced with some certainty to the 'Mamluk Dynasty' around 1250, and these Turkic descendants established a thriving carpet industry in Cairo in the 15th century. As with many ancient designs, the Afghan weavers, particularly, have focused their skills on revisiting the designs and producing them in exciting colours. As you may expect, these pieces are handmade, often using traditional vegetable-dyed wool on cotton foundations. The final finishing process, such as surface clipping and herbal washing, is generally undertaken in Pakistan. The Afghan Mamluk carpets at Jennings rugs are amongst the most highly prized pieces with a level of detail that often surpass Oriental carpets and rugs produced in Iran (Persian). The fine weave and beautiful wool make these pieces very desirable. You can buy these from our online shop or by a personal visit to Tewkesbury, where you will also be able to see many other fascinating designs of handmade rugs and Oriental carpets, Persian designs and a large collection of other Afghan rugs mixed with exotic silks from Kashmir or Iran.
