Handmade Oriental rug
362 x 274cm (11'11 x 9'0)
If you are looking for a luxury Oriental large carpet, you may want to consider buying this Afghan Aryana rug. It has all the hallmarks of a Persian design and the excellent interpretive benefit of a specially commissioned Afghan piece. In addition, the high knot count will make it attractive to very discerning buyers who value this skill level. These weavers can produce outstanding works in the most challenging circumstances; it is hard to imagine the hours of labour that will have taken to make such an accomplished piece. The carpet is essentially a soft red with a curvilinear design finely traced through using small jewel-like colours of green, blue and ochre.
Afghan Aryana rugs are hand-knotted in Mazar-e-Sharif and Kabul in Afghanistan, often using designs for museum pieces. Woven from long wool sheared from Karakul sheep, the wool is washed gently with water; then hand combed and hand-spun on a spindle. The wool is vegetable dyed using plants, flowers and berries, walnut husks and pomegranate rind, madder root and indigo. Not surprisingly, wools vary in colour due to differences in the dyes' absorption, resulting in a feature referred to as 'Abrash'- giving Aryana rugs their unique colour and distinct appearance.
It is very pleasing that the Afghan weaving industry is thriving again with the recent production of high-quality pieces commissioned by Afghan designers who now collaborate with Pakistan finishers to secure the best of both worlds (weaving and herbal washing and final surface clipping). The movement of Afghan people into Pakistan through necessity has largely halted. More recently, we have seen displaced people moving back into Afghanistan, securing a new beginning for themselves, sometimes aided by international intervention.
The result for the Oriental carpet and rug industry has been very positive, producing some very high-grade work, such as these Aryana pieces, sat alongside exciting finds like Mamluk and Samarkand. The traditional weaving industry will undoubtedly continue with details like Kazak, Kunduz, and Balouch. In any event, the highlight is a thriving and more sustainable craft industry.
